Last year, we explored our connection to the Divine Within Us (Va'ani Tefilati). This year, we explore our connection to each other. Am Echad, Lev Echad - One People, One Heart.
In times of turmoil, in times of stress, we remember this fact. We are one people. We have one heart.
Our heart beats with sadness for those members of the Jewish people who have been taken and kept hostage since last year, whose release we pray for every single day and every single Shabbat.
Our heart beats alongside their families, made to suffer the tragedy of losing a loved one and not knowing if they will get them back.
When we come together for simchas, joyous occasions, our heart feels the joy of being together despite the struggles that are simultaneously faced.
Our heart rejoices when, despite the pain, we can reconnect once again to celebrate together.

This Simchat Torah, when we Jews celebrate concluding the annual reading of the Torah and starting all over again, we’ve got a question for you; What’s your favourite story from the Torah? And a follow up question: What would that look like on top of your head?
Taking a page from the style and spirit of the Royal Ascot, the Kentucky Derby and the Met Gala, everyone is invited to create their own Torah Top Hat, Bible Bonnet, Five Books Fascinator, Deuteromic Derby, perhaps a Pentateuchic Pillbox or a Scriptural Skullcap. Design a hat based on something found in the Torah!
Got an idea but think you’re not “crafty” enough to pull it off? You can choose to enter your head-covering handiwork into our Millinery Midrash Competition. Wear your creation to the Simchat Torah hakafot–everyone will be able to vote for their favourite designs.
Need help coming up with an idea or getting the idea out of your brain and on top of your head? No worries—we’ll be holding Maker Sessions in September to help get you going. Contact Penina Hoffnung to coordinate a maker session that’s convenient for you.
