Jewish education should be about more than memorizing facts
and learning just enough Hebrew to read your Bar or Bat Mitzvah portion. At the
Beth Tzedec Congregational School Experience, (CSX), we help children shape
their Jewish identities and learn about their place in our community and in the
larger world.
Our students forge lifelong friendships and learn to be
active participants in Jewish living and learning. From JK to Grade 7, they explore
Judaism through movement, games and project-based learning that transforms
congregational school into an engaging and meaningful experience.
Classes take place on
Sunday mornings from 9:15 am to 12:00 noon.
For students in Grade 3 and up, there is an additional
component of one weekday afternoon per week for Hebrew language education.
Parents have a choice in how to fulfil this weekday hour, either at the
synagogue, at home or online.
Our Classes
- Junior/Senior
Kindergarten: Our youngest learners begin to develop an oral Hebrew
vocabulary using actions, props and games. They are introduced to the key
rituals and symbols of Jewish life, become familiar with important blessings, prayers
and songs and the concept of a mitvah
as a good deed is both taught and acted upon.
- Grades
1-2: These students strengthen their Hebrew vocabulary, expand their
knowledge of prayers, participate in active learning about Tzedakah and grow their connection to Israel and Israelis. Grade 2
learners begin to read and write Hebrew, using their existing vocabulary base
to quickly pick up these new skills.
- Grades
3-5: Learners at this level continue to develop their Hebrew speaking,
reading and writing skills and focus on the Jewish holidays and their sense of
Jewish identity. They begin to understand the impact of the synagogue
community, the local Jewish community, the State of Israel and our collective
past.
- Grades
6-7: These students begin exploring their role in the larger world. They
examine their place in Jewish history, learning about our people’s collective
past, including the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel.
These topics help prepare each student to become a member of the adult Jewish
community as they approach their Bar or Bat Mitzvah.
- Grades
4-7 Accelerated Class: This class is designed for students who have
attended Jewish Day School through Grade 3 or higher. The curriculum focuses on
Hebrew language, Jewish ritual and history, and Jewish peoplehood and is taught
by a young and energetic Jewish day school teacher. The class moves at a more
rapid pace than our regular CSX classes and is partially taught in Hebrew.
