Faye Kellerstein has been performing in Toronto for over 35 years as a solo singer and “chorister”. She sang in our Beth Tzedec Choir for 18 years (beginning in 1994) and has been singing for the last five years as a member of the chorus of Toronto City Opera, having had to memorize Italian and French lyrics.

Faye was born in a displaced persons’ camp in post-war Germany and is the daughter of Polish-born holocaust survivors, Helen and Philip Zucker. Yiddish was the first language she heard and spoke. She and her parents immigrated to Canada when Faye was only 3 years of age. Faye still remembers that she had to learn to speak English quickly and to translate words from English to Yiddish to help her parents understand.

A language teacher by profession, Faye combined her teaching skills with music, presenting many Jewish music programs over the years that are both entertaining and educational, not only in Toronto but also in Ottawa, Kingston, Kitchener and Buffalo, at Jewish Book Fair, The National Library of Canada in Ottawa and at Ashkenaz.

Faye has taught Yiddish language classes to both adults and children. After she recorded her first CD of Yiddish folksongs, she decided that it would be great to introduce Yiddish music to children and Faye produced a children’s Yiddish musical play called “A Kiddush For Yiddish” at the Fairview Library Theatre. The children who performed in this production were very enthusiastic about learning and performing the songs.

Her CD of Yiddish folksongs was entitled “A Feygele Zingt” which means

“A Bird Sings” but it’s also a play on words, since Faye’s Yiddish name is Feygele. Some of her Yiddish songs were actually played on CBC Radio.
