I think of the month of Tishrei, the first month of the Jewish year as being in a tayva - ark, or a container of sorts. We spend lots of time in synagogue, starting the ark, engaged in self-focus, and assessing how we live our lives and what needs to change. Of course, we do this as part of a community, standing alongside those who share our destiny as part of the Jewish people.
When Noah's ark finally comes to a rest, God instructs him and his family, quite forcefully, “Tzay min hatayva - exit the ark” (Genesis 8:16). You can't stay in this state forever. You can't remain protected and removed from the rest of the world.
Friends, while our world is still terrifying and painful at times, there is so much beauty and life to live. Today, as we begin the new month of Cheshvan, we each need to find a way to get out into the world, engage in acts of kindness, in moments of joy, in learning, growth and action. We have a month without chagim, Jewish holidays, to hold the space to partner with God as we build the communities and lives that we are desperate for. As we recited in the Blessing of the new month last month, may this month bring us joy, comfort and safety.
