On Thursday, May 23, The Great American Jewish Songbook concert was held at the George Weston Recital Hall (Toronto Centre for the Arts). The sold-out show featured medleys written by some of the world’s most popular Jewish artists, including George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Neil Diamond and Carole King.
Beth Tzedec’s Cantor Simon Spiro performed alongside five talented Broadway-style singers and a spectacular 30-piece orchestra. Our marvelous youth choir, Voices of Tomorrow, thrilled the audience with songs from Lionel Bart’s classic musical Oliver, with Cantor Simon assuming the comical role of Fagin.
In addition to being one of our Synagogue’s major events of the year, the production was also the signature concert for Jewish Music Week in Toronto. The show was written and directed by Aliza Spiro.
