Bringing the Community Together: The Week's End, March 21, 2025
Mar 21st 2025

The name and opening word of our parasha is vayakhel, meaning to gather. This moment in the Torah follows the sin of the Golden Calf and the resulting shame and punishment. God comes close to destroying the entire Jewish people before Moshe defends them and calms the divine wrath. Rashi points out that the word vayakhel is distinct from gathering things with our hands, but rather refers to gathering people simply with words. It is not a show of force or coercion, but an intimate gathering of the people who need reassurance and care. Moshe, who doesn’t always get it right, understands that his people need a moment of togetherness and unity. Part of our work as a synagogue, as a spiritual community, is to curate these moments when we need it most. We hope that as you take a look at our offerings over the months ahead, you see this intention and care.

Like Moshe, we hope you can find a moment this Shabbat to use your words to help others feel cared for and seen.

Shabbat Shalom!
