Answering the Syrian Refugee Crisis
Sep 18th 2015

Since June 2015 Beth Tzedec Congregation has been in discussions with JIAS (Jewish Immigration Aid Services) Toronto about sponsoring a refugee family from Syria.

We have committed to sponsor one family of four at a cost of $30,000. This figure helps to cover basic needs and start-up costs of refugees during their first 12 months in Canada. We need your help to move forward. In order to respond to the urgency of this situation and submit an official application, we will need to provide 60 percent of the cost.

Over the past week we have received many emails and phone calls from Beth Tzedec congregants inquiring about whether we will be doing anything to help with the crisis in Syria and Syrian refugees, and with offers to support our efforts. We ask you to join us in this project and make your commitment by that date.

Here is what you can do to help:

  1. Join the refugee sponsorship committee; help with the settlement effort, fundraise, deal with logistics, offer friendship and emotional support to the resettled family.
  2. Contribute now by calling the office and making your tax deductible donation before September 27, designated to the Syrian Refugee Program.
  3. Organize a fundraiser to help with this initiative.

If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Director Community Building and Spiritual Engagement Yacov Fruchter at 647-267-8752 who will be guiding this effort for Beth Tzedec.
